Cashel is a peaceful seaside village, situated on Cashel Bay, an inlet of Bertarghboy Bay. It is located on the west coast of Ireland an area of outstanding beauty. It takes its name from a circular stone fort, the remains of which lie on the slope of a mountain about 1 Km to the north-east.
Cashel lies along the western seaboard of Connemara and is connected to the Roundstone by the very scenic road known as Cloonisle. Climb Cashel Hill and you will be rewarded with breath-taking views of the rugged coastline and the unspoilt beauty of Connemara.
Some 5 km to the west is Toombeola Bridge, near which are the remains of a Dominican Abbey, founded in 1427, by one of the O’Flaherty clan which held sway over Connemara until the reign of James II.
Cashel is a perfect base for exploring Connemara National Park, a vast expanse of mountains, bogs, lakes and unspoilt coastline. Discover tiny coves, peaceful bays and fishing villages like Roundstone, Ballyconneely and Leenane. The vibrant town of Clifden has several venues for traditional Irish music and is less than 25 minutes’ drive from Cashel.
Some of the most beautiful places you will see or enjoy may be off the beaten track and should be explored on foot, by bicycle or on a boat!
