Recess, set among superb lake and mountain scenery, is a real beauty spot in Connemara with Glendalough Lake on one side and Derryclare Lough on the other. North of Derryclare, Lough Inagh stretches along the glaciated valley of Glen Inagh, separating the Twelve Bens from the Maamturk Mountains. It is a hauntingly beautiful place, fringed by the mountain ranges and enhanced by forests on the foothills of the Twelve Bens. A small but charming strip of shops makes up Recess village, with Joyce’s Craft Shop and Art Gallery providing a genuinely good reason to get out of the car and stretch your legs. Recess is the home of the famous Connemara green marble and don’t forget to visit the Connemara Giant in the car park opposite to make a wish. Lough Inagh is renowned for game fishing and boats can be hired locally by visitors. Lough Inagh Lodge has a lovely traditional bar and a great restaurant, both serving excellent food. Further north into Connemara brings you to Killary where you can take a cruise up Killary fjord.
